Clemens Eckhoff (born in Oldenburg, Germany) founded the Eckhoff Furniture Company on 21st and Palm in 1893. Prior to the formation of his own furniture company, Eckhoff partnered with Theodore Hanpeter and produced kitchen safes and wardrobes for homesteaders journeying out into the “western territories.” The partnership flourished from 1881-1893, whereupon Eckhoff built his own factory from income on tenant rental fees and a $600 bank loan.

Wood for the factory came from a lumberyard on the opposite side of 21st street between Palm and Branch streets. The five story Eckhoff factory building dried lumber behind their building and, once ready for processing, moved it indoors for manufacturing. A boiler—fueled by scrap wood and shavings—supplied steam power to a twenty-foot flywheel. This flywheel provided mechanical energy to the entire building and its different woodworking machines (i.e., ripsaws, crosscut saws, mortising and tenoning machines, etc).

The factory produced highly reputable goods and sold them to markets primarily outside of St. Louis—Chicago being one of their largest consumers. Clemens Eckhoff would remain boss/CEO of Eckhoff furniture until 1920 when he sold the company, after which he donated much of his wealth to St. Augustine’s and Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Eckhoff’s eleven children and his wife, Mary, lived comfortably until the mid-1930s when most of the children’s inheritance was mortgaged.
